Kokořínsko protected nature reserve – established in 1976. The reserve extends over the area of 272 km2 of the Bohemian Cretaceous Plate Formation, a characteristic geomorphologic relief made of block sandstone, which effloresced and weathered to form rock towers and deep, terraced valleys. The most famous of these formations are called "rock lids", and have been adopted as the main symbol of the nature reserve. The dominant landscape features include magmatic extruded rocks consisting of phonolite, basalt or trachyte mounds and cones – Vlhošť, Ronov and Vrátenská Hora. The varied natural conditions have resulted in an uncommonly rich range of plant species, from cryophilous plants at the bottom of the canyons, through exceptionally rare wetland ecosystems in alluvial stream areas to thermophilous plants on the remains of rock steppes. Visitors are likewise attracted by the deep and rich forests and by the traditional stave, half-timbered and masonry architecture, as well as by Kokořín Castle.
